Subionospheric VLF observations of transmitter-induced precipitation of inner radiation belt electrons

چکیده
[1] Ionospheric effects of energetic electron precipitation induced by controlled injection of VLF signals from a ground based transmitter are observed via subionospheric VLF remote sensing. The 21.4 kHz NPM transmitter in Lualualei, Hawaii is keyed ON-OFF in 30 minute periodic sequences. The same periodicity is observed in the amplitude and phase of the sub ionospherically propagating signals of the 24.8 kHz NLK (Jim Creek, Washington) and 25.2 kHz NLM (LaMoure, North Dakota) transmitters measured at Midway Island. Periodic perturbations of the NLK signal observed at Palmer, Antarctica suggest that energetic electrons scattered at longitudes of NPM continue to be precipitated into the atmosphere as they drift toward the South Atlantic Anomaly. Utilizing a model of the magnetospheric waveparticle interaction, ionospheric energy deposition, and subionospheric VLF propagation, the precipitated energy flux induced by the NPM transmitter is estimated to peak at L 2 and 1.6 10 4 ergs s 1 cm . Contrasting the responses of three different groundbased instruments to energetic electron precipitation
[1] In order to make best use of the opportunities provided by space missions such as the Radiation Belt Storm Probes, we determine the response of complementary subionospheric radiowave propagation measurements (VLF), riometer absorption measurements, cosmic noise absorption, and GPS-produced total electron content (vTEC) to different energetic electron precipitation (EEP). We model the relati...
متن کاملLightning driven inner radiation belt energy deposition into the atmosphere: regional and global estimates
In this study we examine energetic electron precipitation fluxes driven by lightning, in order to determine the global distribution of energy deposited into the middle atmosphere. Previous studies using lightning-driven precipitation burst rates have estimated losses from the inner radiation belts. In order to confirm the reliability of those rates and the validity of the conclusions drawn from...
متن کاملTransmitter-induced modulation of subionospheric VLF signals: Ionospheric heating rather than electron precipitation
[1] The controlled keying of ground-based VLF transmitters with periodic on/off sequences allows the detection of weak but measurable cross-modulation effects on other subionospheric VLF probe signals used for VLF remote sensing. In this paper, we reexamine previously published and additional cases of such events and determine that the initial interpretations of such cross modulation as being d...
متن کاملEnergetic particle precipitation into the middle atmosphere triggered by a coronal mass ejection
[1] Precipitation of relativistic electrons into the atmosphere has been suggested as the primary loss mechanism for radiation belt electrons during large geomagnetic storms. Here we investigate the geographical spread of precipitation as a result of the arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME) on 21 January 2005. In contrast to previous statistical studies we provide one of the first attempts ...

[1] An array of seven ELF/VLF receivers in Alaska is utilized for direction finding and determination of ionospheric exit point of whistler mode chorus waves from the Earth’s magnetosphere. Each receiver records both orthogonal horizontal magnetic components of the chorus waves. All sites use GPS-synchronized sampling, allowing for the localization of ionospheric exit points utilizing both arri...
